What is a transit (branch) number?
The transit number (also known as a branch number) is a 5 digit number that identifies the specific bank branch where your account is held, which is typically the physical location where you first opened it or “home branch”. This number may change if the bank branch closes or moves or the bank goes through a merger, acquisition or consolidation. If this happens, you will likely be notified by your bank beforehand.
The last digit indicates the region of Canada the account is located in:
XXXX0for BC and YKXXXX1for western QC, including Montreal and surrounding areasXXXX2for southern ON, including Toronto and surrounding areaXXXX3for NS, PEI, NLXXXX4for NBXXXX5for eastern QC and LabradorXXXX6for eastern ON, including OttawaXXXX7for MB and northwestern OntarioXXXX8for SKXXXX9for AB, NT and NU
Where is my bank’s transit number?
You can find the transit number for your bank account in a number of places:
- Cheque
- Bank statement
- Bank’s website or app
- Deposit slips
- Contacting your bank by phone or in person
If you know the address of the branch you opened your account at, you can search it in this PDF (or this one sorted by city):
BMO
- Log in to your BMO online banking account.
- Click on the “My Accounts” tab at the top of the page.
- On the left side of the page, select the account that you want your routing number for.
- You’ll see your branch number and institution number in the blue box at the top of the screen. You can also click on the “void cheque” link to download a PDF of a void cheque with your routing number and account details on it.
Alternative, use BMO’s branch locator to find yours and it will give you the transit number:
CIBC
- Sign on to CIBC Online Banking and go to “My Accounts.”
- Find the number associated with your deposit or Personal Line of Credit account which appears in the format xxxxx-yy-yyyyy: the first 5-digit number [xxxxx] is the transit number and the last 7-digit number [yy-yyyyy] is the bank account number.
- Check your CIBC account eStatement.

Scotiabank
- Log into your Scotiabank account and from your Accounts page, select your chequing account.
- Then select Show account number and details to see your account, institution, and transit number.

- Log in to EasyWeb, select the account you want to view
- Select the “Direct deposit form (PDF)” link on the right side of the page.
