'Be aware': Packed room for Chattanooga active shooting training & Stop the Bleed course

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — You never know when tragedy will strike your school, workplace, or part of your city.

That's why Chattanooga Police and Erlanger offered a free class on what to do in an active shooter situation Wednesday.

The room was packed at Chattanooga State Community College with people eager to learn what they should do in an active shooter situation.

The purpose of the class is to change your mindset.

First, Chattanooga Police Sergeant Sean O'Brien says you should remember the saying ' Avoid, Deny and Defend.'

O'Brien says you should make sure to be aware of you surroundings and have an exit plan.

Next, keep a distance between you and the source and create barriers to prevent or slow down a threat from getting to you.

Lastly, be prepared to defend yourself by being aggressive and committed to your actions.

Some people we spoke to say a class like this is needed in the community.

"I need to be aware of the exit and if something happens... what is my plan and don't wait for it to happen. I need to be prepared for it to happen," Pat Henley said.

Larry Adkins says he's part of a group that meets at a local church in Lafayette, Georgia. He hopes to pass the tools he learned along to members in his group.

"This class educates you more or less and don't just lay back and assume anything," Adkins added.

People also learned life-saving interventions for bleeding control, including applying direct pressure, gauze packs and a tourniquet to a wound.
