Photograph majestic icebergs in one of Greenland’s most stunning locations

It’s often said that Greenland is a place you need to see with your own eyes to believe it’s real. Witnessing the UNESCO Ilulissat Icefjord and Disko Bay in person is definitely one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences. It’s arguably one of the most impressive and most beautiful environments of the Arctic. The whole ocean surrounding the town of Ilulissat is covered in icebergs of all shapes and size - some even as large as a whole apartment building.

During this workshop we will focus on capturing the serene beauty of the floating ice under the midnight sun from both the shoreline and a private chartered boat. While our main focus are the icebergs, we will also spend time to visit a small & remote Greenlandic settlement. Finally, we will sail to one of the many origins of the icebergs, the Eqi glacier. It's one of the world's fastest calving glaciers. A must-see!

A bucket list item for many landscape photographers for sure!

Itinerary

Day 1: We fly early in the morning from Keflavik International Airport in Iceland to Ilulissat, a small town located next to the UNESCO Icefjord (flight included). After checking into the hotel, we will explore the Icefjord and Disko Bay by hiking around the area. If conditions allow, we will shoot in the evening to use the sunset to our advantage.

Day 2-5: We will sail out onto the Icefjord and Disko Bay multiple times to photograph the icebergs from the water in a private charter. Additionally, we will explore the small village of Oqaatsut where we will also have dinner at a local restaurant (included). Finally, we also have a day excursion to the Eqi glacier, which is one of the most actively calving glaciers in the world.

Day 6: On the last day, we set out to explore the Icefjord and Disko Bay by hiking around the area again before heading back to the Ilulissat airport late in the evening.

Day 7: After our flight back to Iceland (flight included), we will arrive very early in the morning back at Keflavik International Airport.

A Note on Nigel

As you probably know Nigel has had back surgery and due to this there maybe a chance he can’t make one of the sailings. It is unlikely but in the case Nigel has to sit out the day excursion Jeroen is more than capable of leading the tour. He wants to be totally honest and ensure that people realise there is a small chance he has to have a rest day.

Jeroen Van Nieuwenhove

Jeroen will be joining Nigel on this workshop as a photography guide.

Jeroen Van Nieuwenhove is an award-winning Belgian landscape and wildlife photographer. In 2016, he threw his life upside down and moved to Iceland. The past years, he dedicated most of his photography to documenting the Central Highlands and volcanic eruptions in Iceland. Most recently, he has received international attention for his dedication and work at the Fagradalsfjall eruptions. He even self-published a book covering the events of the Geldingadalir eruption from day one.
