Milanda Bread ; advert in the Daily Record & Mail, Glasgow, 8 June 1934 : reproduced for "Four-Colour Illustrations in the "Glasgow Record" : Penrose Annual , Volume 37, 1935
One of the articles in the 1935 Penrose's Annual looks at the introduction of new Crabtree newspaper presses at the Glasgow printing works of the Associated Scottish Newspapers - the company that produced the "Daily Record", the Glasgow "Evening News" and the "Sunday Mail". ASN had decided on new presses in 1933 and on 21 May 1934 the first editions were printed on the new machines and allowed four-colour illustrations to be printed.
One of the early uses of this technology were the owners of Milanda Bread who took out this full page advert, on 8 June 1934, to sell their "new bread discovery" and so I am thinking this is not long after the introduction of the Milanda brand. Such national and regional bread brands, for pre-packed loaves, were taking off in the inter-war years and starting to displace bread from 'local' bakers. They were, like Milanda, heavily promoted and this brand became a favourite in Scotland.
I notice that it is shown as baked by J & B Stevenson and Lang's Bread Co Ltd and they must, at some point, have helped form the Milanda Bread Company. The advert also notes the production of that Scottish staple - the pan loaf. The advert also takes a swipe at the other local major bread producer - the Scottish Wholesale Co-operative Society as it notes "your good friends the private retailers".
