Constancy

1 Chronicles 28:7

Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do my commandments and my judgments, as at this day.

God's promise to Solomon to bless his kingdom depended upon one little phrase. That little phrase is, if he be constant. God was more interested in Solomon doing right day in and day out more than He was with him having spurts of doing right and then going back to a life of sin. God knows that constancy is the key to blessings.

One of the greatest needs in churches today are believers who will be constant in their Christian walk and ministry. One detriment to our churches today are believers who do right for a short time and then go back to living a life of sin. You cannot expect God to bless your life when you serve Him for a short time and then return to the world to live in sin. If you want God's blessings on your life, you must be constant in everything you do.

So what does constant mean? Constant means to remain the same over a period of time. Constant means to be faithful to what you are doing. Constant means to be consistent with your life, actions, and decisions. In other words, being constant is being predictable in actions, beliefs, and decisions because you have done these so many times. Being constant is getting into a routine and sticking with that routine no matter what you face.

Those who know me know that I am a man of routine. No matter what day it is, I get up at the same time every day. I do the same things at the same time all the time. I read my Bible early in the morning every day. I pray every morning at the same time. I study for sermons each week on the same day and at the same time. This is what I have chosen to do, and that consistency to do that is what has kept me constant in serving the LORD.

You will never be constant in serving the LORD unless you are consistent in what you do for the LORD. Consistency is doing the same thing day in and day out. Constancy is not having extreme highs and lows, but it is being the same all the time. Let me share a couple thoughts about the importance of being constant.

First, you choose to be constant. You choose to be constant by choosing to be consistent. A person is not constant because they choose not to be consistent. If you were to put your life on a spreadsheet and chart how you live, would the lines show extreme highs and lows, or would your life show lines that are constant? You must choose to be constant if you want your life not to have the extreme highs and lows that lead to inconsistency in serving God.

Second, it is not easy to be constant, but it can be done. There will be days when you will not feel like doing right and doing what you are supposed to do. However, you cannot let feelings determine your actions and decisions. If your life is going to be constant, you must choose to be consistent in your actions despite how you feel.

Third, constancy determines God’s blessings on your life. If you are constant in serving the LORD, you will find yourself living in the blessings of God. My friend, do not have major swings in life because of feelings. Let the principles of the Word of God dictate all you do so that you can be constant and enjoy His blessings to their fullest.
