- 2. DEFINITION OF LIGHTING/ ILLUMINATION
Definition of Illumination / light :- light is a form of
radiant energy from a hot body which produces a
visual sensation upon human eye sense. It is
usually denoted by Q and expressed in " lumen -
hour " which is analogies to watt-hour .
- 3. ADVANTAGES OF GOOD ILLUMINATION
improvement in productivity increment with good lighting.
good illumination increases the focus , concentration , working
place will have higher productivity.
we can avoid accident in working places and populated area .
In street more than 70% of road accident , because of bad
illumination or not proper lighting .
Good lighting /illumination will avoid depression, dullness, glare
free and many problems related eye .
in decorative purpose we should have a proper and good
illumination for better look, environmental happiness etc .
good illumination will avoid eye strain and fatigue .
good lighting schemes will reduces excessive brightness,
contrast, glare and disturbing glass .
good lighting schemes will have good lighting maintenance.
good illumination will create a good atmosphere .
- 4. TYPES OF GOOD ILLUMINATION SYSTEMS
Types of lighting system :-
1. Direct lighting :-
this is most efficient schemes of lighting .
90 % of total light is made to fall on the working
surface or plane .
light does not shine on ceiling .
illumination is not uniform by this scheme because
it causes shadows and glare .
lamp surface is easily visible to observer .
Application :- shop, industrial , and outdoor use in
big hall area , workshop , railway station etc .
- 5. 2. Semi - direct lighting :-
a bit too weak to use as a focus scheme of
lighting .
60% of total light is made to fall directly
downwards on the working plane or surface.
40% of total goes upward and diffused with
the help of sheds and upper walls .
light does shine on the ceiling .
Application : Dining table , rooms with high
ceiling, gate etc.
- 6. 3. INDIRECT LIGHTING
Soft reflected light .
90% of total light is made to thrown to the ceiling
and this diffused light reflected by reflector which
fall on the working surface or plane.
little light reaches the floor.
illumination is uniform and glare free.
Application :- computer rooms, software industry ,
hotels, theaters, decoration etc.
- 7. FEATURE OF GOOD LIGHTING SCHEME :
To avoid adequate illumination : for different
purpose , different level of illumination are required
, that requirement shell be fulfilled.
To avoid glare and hard shadow : disposition of
lamps and the method such direct and indirect shall
be adopted , such that hard shadows and glare on
the eye shell be avoided .
To provide suitable light colour : different lamp
emits light of different colours, generally whitish day
light colour is desirable .
To provide light distribution uniformly over the
working plane : Disposition of the lamp shall be
proper to achieve this objective .
