- 1. Going Green By Rebecca Gladstone, Sarah Dubin, & Megan Deetscreek
- 2. What is Going Green? Going Green, also referred to as the environmental movement, is a social movement in which activists seek to protect natural resources and ecosystems to ultimately save our earth.
- 3. Eco-Friendly Fashion The term “eco-fashion” refers to stylized clothing that uses environmentally sensitive fabrics and responsible production techniques. How to support Eco-friendly fashion: - Organic clothing items! How Organic clothing items protect our environment: - Organic products refrain from using pesticides during production. Pesticides act as a source of rapid destruction to our environment and deterioration of our human health.
- 4. Influential People who are Green Travel- Whitney Tilt oversees Everlands Conservation Initiative’s conservation prize and preserves the clubs many environmental sites. Fashion- Stella McCartney is a designer who has prohibited the use of fur and lather on her runway. E-commerce- Pricilla Woolworth has launched a digital general store that sells hard-to find eco- friendly items. Retail- Paulette Cole transformed ABC Home into an environmentally-friendly focused business majoring in “good wood” furniture. Education- David de Rothschild founded Adventure Ecology to raise environmental awareness.
- 5. Green Technology Energy the development of alternative fuels, new means of generating energy and energy efficiency. Green building the choice of building materials, location, and reducing resources and energies. Environmentally preferred purchasing the search for products whose contents and methods of production have the smallest possible impact on the environment, and authorizes that these be the favored products for government purchasing. Green chemistry The invention, design and application of chemical products and processes to reduce or to eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. Green nanotechnology Nanotechnology involves the manipulation of materials at the scale of the nanometer. Some scientists believe that mastery of this subject is forthcoming that will transform the way that everything in the world is manufactured. "Green nanotechnology" is the application of green chemistry and green engineering principles to this field.
- 6. Transportation (the smart car) Conserving fuel : Products: Fuel magic super fuel saver- a highly concentrated cetane booster. It adds power and reduces pollution in all types of diesel and gasoline engines. The car features a stop/go function to lower emissions and increased gas mileage The new model consumes 8 percent less fuel in the combined cycle, and 19 percent less fuel in urban traffic The smart electric ED emits no carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, unburned hydrocarbons or any harmful substance – in fact it emits nothing. The car maintains all the safety features you find in a regular Smart, including ESP, ABS brakes 4 airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners. When drained, it can be charged at any 230 volt power socket and you can charge the batteries up to 1000 times. Rumor has it, the Tesla battery can last up to ten years. When fully charged, the Smart can travel a distance of approximately 80 miles and has a top speed of 70 mph. The electric drive Smart Fortwo is said to be the most cost-effective and climate-friendly option for metropolitan driving.
- 7. Transportation The Smart fortwo EV had a top speed of 75 mph and a range of 70 miles. Acceleration was very good with a time of 0-30 mph in 6.5 seconds. This was a quicker time than a gasoline-powered Fortwo. A re-charge can be achieved in 2-4 hours and a complete recharge took 8 hours. The 45 hp smart Fortwo Diesel - the world's smallest diesel engine - can travel over 631 miles on a single tank of fuel. Driving at an average speed of 30 miles per hour the CDI Smart can achieve over 100 miles per gallon on diesel fuel. This smart car by utilizes Bio Diesel and runs on 100% vegetable oil recycled from some of the finest restaurants!
- 8. Eco-Friendly Toys Smencils (made of 100 percent recycled paper) Sketch book pages and all 12 colored pencils are made of recycled paper. Clean the Earth with Idbids Through story book and field guide, children tlearn to help keep the earth happy, healthy and green. Green toys help introduce environmental issues to children in a fun way, while aiding the fight to save our earth. Eco-friendly toys are made from natural, safe materials which do not harm the environment. Eco- friendly toys usually consist of: - organic material - wood - recycled cardboard
- 9. Green Architecture Green buildings goal: to reduce all impact on environment and human health. Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources. Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity. Reducing waste, pollution and environmental deterioration. Benefits on buildings: reduce operating costs by increasing productivity. Impact on the environment: protect wildlife, increase wetlands, reduce energy and water consumption, reduce the amount of pollution.
- 10. Green Home Improvement (how to be green at home) Save money in the bathroom--Buy water-efficient showerheads. With low-flow models, a family of four can cut water usage by as much as 280 gallons a month — and yet not feel much difference in water pressure. Two we like: Kohler's Master Shower Eco (kohler.com) and Niagara Conservation's Earth Massage (niagaraconservation.com). Adjust fridge and freezer temps--Refrigerators eat up the most electricity in the household. Maximize efficiency by keeping the fridge at 37° F. and the freezer at 0° F. Mow-ercise!--Today's non-gasoline-powered reel lawn mowers are easier to push than the old models. Their eco-benefit: zero emissions (plus, you're getting great exercise). If you prefer a power mower, consider a quiet, battery-operated model from Black & Decker. Go native--Plant flowers and shrubs that are well suited to your climate (the staff at your local nursery can help). The benefit: You'll use less fertilizer and pesticides. Buy a laptop--It uses considerably less power than a desktop computer.
