Connotation vs. denotation
For Rent:
This tiny, old place has bland
painted walls and a cement
pad for the backyard. Cheap
place that needs lots of work.
For Rent:
This cozy, vintage home has
neutral-toned walls and an-
easy-to-care-for yard.
Bargain-priced fixer-upper!
 These words all have a similar meaning:
home, house, residence, and dwelling
 But give a different feeling!
 ……Where a person lives at any given time.
 Home: cozy, loving, comfortable
 House: the actual building
 Residence: cold, no feeling
 Dwelling: primitive or basic surrounding
 Even though these four words have the same denotation (literal
meaning, or dictionary definition)…
 They all have a different connotation (figurative meaning that is either
positive or negative)
 Denotation is the strict dictionary meaning of a word.
 Denotation is the literal meaning of the word.
 Connotation is the emotional, cultural, and/or imaginative meaning or
association surrounding a word.
 A connotation of a word can be either positive or negative.
 If something doesn’t cost a lot, we can call it either CHEAP or
INEXPENSIVE.
 This is the DENOTATION of the words inexpensive and cheap.

 When something has never been there before, we can call that
either NEW or UNPROVEN.

feeling evoked by a word.
